altCetera

Eclectic seating at altCetera

What I liked…

  • Convenience to the airport. The hotel is located next to the airport's Value Park garage with direct train access to both terminals and the UP Express.
  • If you book in advance, the hotel has great package deals that include the Value Park parking for 10 days at a time. We were charged $209 for one night prior to our flight and another $209 for the night we return and an additional $15 for the extra day that was over our 20 day limit.  For 2 night's hotel stay and parking for 3 weeks directly at the airport, it is a great value.
  • altCetera - their self-serve, casual cafeteria-style bar in the lobby area. Not overly

Bar and self-serve snacks at altCetera.

fancy but enough selection to satisfy, plenty of seating and for business travellers, self-serve snacking is more welcome than the usual sit-down table service. They also host wine tastings, occasional weekend entertainment and other fun things to keep you busy during your stay.

  • Clean, modern and new - the design of the hotel is european sleek with high ceilings, mixed finishes and cool colour tones. It is a little feel of Europe - but right outside the airport in Toronto.
  • Bed was comfy. Actually slept in until 7am (VERY rare for me).
  • Under the TV is a full panel of ways to hook up your own technology to the TV as a monitor, including HDMI, USB and A/V inputs.
  • The layout of our room was a good choice for us - with all of our luggage. We had a fairly large entrance hallway just inside the door of out room to leave our bags and luggage cart - without having to drag them into the main part of the room.
  • I love the pump bottles of hand soap and lotion at the bathroom sink and the trio of pumps in the shower. Plentiful! (I still don't understand why most hotels do not have hand soap ready to go on their bathroom counters.

What I didn’t like so much…

  • alt bathroom

    modern bathroom

No bottled water in the room. Once I check-in to a hotel for the night, I don't like having to venture all the way down to the lobby to buy a bottle of water. I don't even mind paying for it, as long as it is handy.

  • The lighting in the bathroom is soft and calming, but for ladies who need to use the mirror, it is a little too soft. I tried to tilt and use the magnifying mirror on the side wall but it was a little awkward for a short girl like me. (Probably just being a bit of 'princess', but bright lights in a bathroom are important to me.)
  • Speaking of lighting...one of the walls in the shower is semi-translucent to the bedroom side of the room. It is a nice look, but when your partner turns on the light in the bathroom in the middle of the night, the wall glows on the other side. Unique design, but not very practical, I think.
  • A nightstand issue. One side has a full setup - outlet, alarm clock and lamp on a table. The other side has nothing. A vertical inset shelf is around the corner with a coffee machine and ice bucket, but it isn't easy to use to put down a book or water bottle at night, let alone plug in a phone.
  • The front desk staff, although friendly, don't seem to always be "on the ball" or very well-trained. Sometimes I think I am always dealing with a "trainee". For example, the first time we stayed here I needed something couriered to my home office overnight. I spent the next couple of days, while I was out of the country, checking in to track the package. The day before I returned home, I finally spoke to someone who "found it" still sitting on a desk in their offices - NOT sent at all. I received barely an apology. Another time I called to change my arrival date and was asked to email the details of my change request that day after the call "just in case" it gets missed. I know it sometimes happens, but to admit it ahead of time? Now that I am used to it (should I be?), I have more patience with them...and at least they are smiling and pleasant. 🙂

This is my third time staying at this hotel and its convenience and simplicity keep me coming back.
