A Lesson In Grapes

I spent some time on Canada's East Coast - diligently working on one of my first podcasts for the fall.

I really want to capture all of my thoughts after my recent trip through wine country in Nova Scotia and all I keep finding myself doing is Googling grape varietals.

The winemakers in Nova Scotia were smart to not try fighting with Mother Nature and work with the grapes that grow best in their backyard.

Some varietals are old standbys that haven't been seen, used or tasted in generations. Others are new hybrids that were created by force or nature and are standing up well to the cool climates and sometimes unpredictable weather of Canada's East Coast.

Here is a quick list of just SOME of the varietals that made a mention in my interviews and tastings this summer...

...and then there were the usual suspects...Vidal, Chardonnay, Riesling, Baco Noir, Ortega, Cabernet Sauvignon and my favourite - Pinot Noir.

With a selection like that in a fairly new wine region, their knack for creativity and their obvious passion for great wine with good acidity (NOT "flabby"), things are only looking up for our little East Coast!
