Fancy Drinkin’

There is no denying it... The cocktail is BACK!

Throughout my recent trip overseas, billboards showcasing different brands of gin, whisky or vodka were everywhere - regardless of the city or country.

While in Spain, a bartender bragged to me that the city of Madrid was the catalyst for the recent global resurgence of the "G&T".  (I am sure that there are a few other countries who may beg to differ.)

Gin distilleries are popping up in just about every country.

In response, tonic waters are being produced in luxurious formats and flavours, with sleek bottles and slick prices.

Without fighting over who brought the cocktail back to glory...whoever DID bring it back - gin lovers, like me, thank you profusely!

So I could expand my knowledge of the "proper" gin and tonic, I spent a couple of hours at London's Chesterfield Mayfair Hotel - in The Terrace Bar.

It is set up like a classic tasting menu - with 4 different "experiences" depending on the style of cocktail you prefer.

If I would have had more time in London, I would have returned for another round or two of their other offerings as well.

G&T Experience

Although their "G&T Experience" was the draw,  I also squeezed in a quick sample of the new "whisky nosing" and "molecular cocktails" that they are now offering guests as an entire new way of experiencing and appreciating all things DRINK.

Similar to the G&T menu, the Whisky Nosing menu offers guests a choice of three different whisky "flights" - Around The World, Scottish Adventure - and for true decadence, a Macallan and Chocolate Pairing.

I think the Macallan and Chocolate Pairing should be on their Dessert Menu!

For those who want to try something daring and "culinary", the Molecular Cocktails are a must try!

From a Sea Salt Air Margarita to a Tipsy Tea for Two, the focus on the entire cocktail selection is an artful marriage of science and cuisine.

With the never-ending flavour combinations possible and the addition of custom vessels, delivery methods and technology, what is served to me at bars like these is always exciting.

The cocktail may be back - but it doesn't look or taste like it used to.

The art of mixology has certainly expanded its definition and its future looks even more promising...and delicious.
